Anyone can put together a Tinkerbell costume with Tinkerbell costume accessories, or so I thought, but the day I found out I had to dig for some Tinkerbell costume accessories, was the day my sanity started to slip away like so much fairy dust. Tinkerbell crazy children in the four to six age range will be happy with a green dress and some recycled fairy wings; their imaginations will fill in the blanks and they think everyone else’s will too.

But get those kids into the seven to ten age range and you need to get seriously authentic, and quickly. Those Tinkerbell accessories that go along with the costume will make it stand out. In the Lord of the Flies world of small girls, where the word “cool” is the most important adjective, having Tinkerbell costume accessories is desperately important.

So off I go… accessorizing. And since I was starting at zero with no idea what to look for, I did the only thing a man in my situation would do. Obviously that didn’t work, so I did the next best thing, I started up the old search engine and took the computer for a spin. Naturally Disney came up with their own little retail show and tell, and all things Tinkerbell rolled across the screen: lunch boxes, water bottles, ipod skins, jackets, pajamas, figurines, posters, snow globes, and even a TV all decked out Tinkerbell style. Two things became very clear to me as I watched this product parade.

One, my children must never, ever, ever go to Disneyland, online or by airplane (it will cost me a fortune) and two, there are a slew of Tinkerbell costume accessories that have nothing to do with the Halloween costume that I was looking for. I got my search engine back on the highway and drove until I got to another turn off, a costume site that sold, you guessed it, costumes, all in the right price range, with all the Tinkerbell costume accessories I could hope for.

Ballet slippers, shoes, purses, bracelets, Tinkerbell candy bags, wands for every taste, and even Tink-Wings eye glasses! ON SALE! And when my daughter strolls down the street, decked out all Tink Style, she won’t be keeping up with the Joneses, she will be the Joneses. And for all of you who think I’m turning my daughter into a materialistic, spoiled, immediate gratification type of girl who gets whatever she wants at the snap of her fingers, well I just have one thing to say to you.

This is a costume that costs only a trifle, and you haven’t seen those awesome Disney Tink Wings Glasses.

Kids Tinkerbell Costumes will be one of the most in-demand costumes for young girls this Halloween. It’s in demand with one of the twin seven year old girls that live in my house anyway, and I’m grateful for it. My wife, craft addict that she is, makes amazing costumes for the girls.

But this year, for some unknown reason, I heard myself saying that I can help out and make my daughter’s Tinkerbell costume, how hard can it be? Famous last words, but I think I can get away with my foolish bravado, because the kids Tinkerbell costume is incredibly easy to make, perfect for a lazy…, I mean efficient, dad such as myself.

All I have to do is buy a little green dress that I can cut up the hem and arm sleeves into little arrow shapes, pick up a pair of fairy wings and a wand, which will be easy given that two weeks prior to Halloween the shopping world will be inundated with cheap costume accessories like fairy wings, and then buy some fairy dust. Fairy dust. That’s the kicker. No Kids Tinkerbell costume would be complete without fairy dust. Grab some sand? Not magical enough. Spray paint some sand with glitter? That is a little gonzo.

I’m sure I can purchase some sparkly sand at a craft store, which seems easier than spreading sand all over my lawn and spraying it with glitter paint. Unfortunately if I hand over a bag of glittery fairy dust to a seven year old girl, I guarantee that fairy dust be all over my house like a sandstorm on a sugar rush. Good ole Tink was trapped in an hourglass by the tormented Captain Hook, so tracking down an hourglass that I can refill with glittery magic fairy dust just might do the trick, and will keep the fairy dust out of the fishbowl. Wait a second, every kids Tinkerbell Costume, and every kid wearing it, will demand some sort of Tinkerbell hairstyle.

I am officially out of my league on hair. Tinkerbell sports a bobbed up bun thingy hairstyle (I’m sure that’s the official word for it), and I have trouble combing in a straight line. The day of Halloween I’ll run her over to a Hairstylist at the mall and have them do it.

Unfortunately Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, which means that my daughter will wear her costume to school the Friday before, which means a second trip to the hairstylist. The costume that comes to mind for me are the Disney Teen Tinkerbell Costumes. Tinkerbell, magical, jealous, loyal, impulsive Tinkerbell, a perfect fit for the churning hormonal soup bucket that is a teenager. Now I can appreciate that forcing all teenagers to wear teen Tinkerbell costumes can come across as a tad draconian, and that there may be just a few teenagers who don’t actually like being told what to do.

Of course North American children are exposed to Peter Pan early in their young lives via the big Disney kid magnet, and yes becoming a tiny, pretty, magical, flying fairy has some inherent appeal to it. The root of the Tinkerbell craze is very simple, organic even. The moms of fairy-crazed little girls (and the occasional boy), and even some of us dads (who would admit it only if forced to walk Captain Hook’s plank), identify with the hard-luck fairy and her adult emotions, while still yearning to be not so grown up ourselves. Tinkerbell is a great compromise between choosing a character with some real depth, and the sparkly, magic wings of youth.

The fastest way for an adult to become a child again, if only for a little while, is by living vicariously through their own children. Parents can see the world anew through their kid’s eyes. Watching a child’s absolute commitment to their own imagination is hypnotic because it reminds us of what we used to have when we were kids.
